Industry benchmarks (2024–2026)

  • Average OTR owner-operator: $1.85–$2.10 per mile total cost. Best operators run under $1.70.
  • Fuel: roughly $0.55–$0.75 per mile depending on diesel price and MPG.
  • Truck payment + insurance: $0.20–$0.40 per mile for most operators. Higher on newer trucks, lower on paid-off iron.
  • Maintenance: $0.10–$0.18 per mile is typical. Over $0.20 and your truck is starting to cost you.
  • If your revenue per mile is below $2.20: your margin is thin. Below $2.00, you're probably losing on dispatched freight after backhauls.
